About the USD/CNY exchange rate
USD/CNY is one of the most politically and economically significant exchange rates in the world, reflecting the trade relationship between the two largest economies. The yuan is not freely floating: each day the People's Bank of China publishes a central reference rate, and onshore trading stays within a band around it.
Offshore yuan (CNH), traded mainly in Hong Kong, can differ slightly from the onshore rate shown here. For businesses importing from China, suppliers frequently quote in US dollars rather than yuan, so check which currency an invoice is actually in before converting.
