About the AUD/USD exchange rate
AUD/USD, the "Aussie", is quoted as US dollars per Australian dollar. The Aussie has spent most of the last few decades below one US dollar, though it rose above parity during the commodities boom around 2011. It's one of the most actively traded pairs in the Asian trading session.
The Australian dollar is closely linked to commodity prices, especially iron ore, and to economic news from China, Australia's biggest export customer. It's also seen as a "risk-on" currency: it tends to rise when global investors are optimistic and fall when they seek safety in the US dollar or yen.
