About the GBP/USD exchange rate
GBP/USD, nicknamed "cable", is one of the oldest continuously traded currency pairs and among the most liquid in the world. The pound has always been worth more than one dollar, though it came close in 1985 and again in 2022, when it briefly fell to about 1.03 after a UK budget announcement rattled markets.
This pair reacts to news on both sides of the Atlantic: Bank of England and Federal Reserve rate decisions, UK and US inflation figures, and UK political events. If you're paid in one currency and spend in the other, even a few cents of movement adds up over a year, so it's worth checking the rate before any large transfer.
