About the USD/JPY exchange rate
USD/JPY is the second most traded currency pair in the world. It's quoted as yen per dollar, so the numbers are large (well over 100) and a move of one full yen is a meaningful change. A higher number means a stronger dollar and a weaker yen, which makes Japan cheaper for visitors paying in dollars.
The biggest long-running influence on this pair is the gap between US and Japanese interest rates. Japan kept rates near zero for decades while US rates moved up and down, and when that gap widens, the yen tends to weaken. Japan's Ministry of Finance has intervened directly at times when the yen fell very quickly, so sharp moves can sometimes reverse suddenly.
