China's currency is officially called the renminbi ("the people's currency"), and the yuan is its unit, much as sterling is the currency and the pound is its unit. Each morning the People's Bank of China sets a central reference rate against the US dollar, and onshore trading is only allowed within a band around that fixing.
Because of capital controls, the yuan effectively trades in two markets: onshore in mainland China (code CNY) and offshore, mainly in Hong Kong (often labeled CNH). The two rates are usually very close but can drift apart. The IMF added the yuan to its Special Drawing Rights basket of reserve currencies in 2016, alongside the dollar, euro, yen, and pound.
