The yen is the third most traded currency in the world and is quoted without decimals, so exchange rates against it look like "150" rather than "1.50". Its original subunits, the sen and rin, were taken out of circulation in 1953, so prices in Japan are always whole yen.
Japan kept interest rates at or near zero for decades, which made the yen a popular funding currency for the "carry trade": borrowing cheaply in yen to invest in higher-yielding currencies elsewhere. The yen also has a reputation as a safe-haven currency that investors buy during global market stress, which can make it move in the opposite direction of stock markets.
