The euro launched in 1999 as an accounting currency, and euro banknotes and coins replaced national currencies like the Deutsche Mark, French franc, and Italian lira in 2002. It is used by more than 20 EU member states and is the second most widely held reserve currency after the US dollar.
One monetary policy set by the European Central Bank in Frankfurt covers economies as different as Germany and Greece, which is why interest-rate decisions in the eurozone involve balancing very different national conditions. Euro banknotes are identical everywhere, while each member country mints coins with its own national design on one side; all of them are legal tender across the whole eurozone.
Where it's used
- The eurozone members of the European Union (Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, and more)
- Montenegro and Kosovo (unilaterally)
- Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, and Vatican City (by agreement)
