Złoty means "golden" in Polish. The current zloty dates to 1995, when Poland redenominated its currency at 10,000 old zloty to one new zloty after the high inflation of the early 1990s. Poland joined the EU in 2004 and is committed to eventually adopting the euro, but has set no date.

Poland has one of the largest economies in Central Europe, and the zloty is the region's most traded currency. Many Poles working elsewhere in Europe send money home, so the EUR/PLN and GBP/PLN rates matter to a large number of households.
