The won is quoted in large numbers, well over a thousand won per US dollar, and its subunit, the jeon, is no longer used, so prices are always whole won. The name shares its origin with the Chinese yuan and Japanese yen, all derived from the same character meaning "round", after round coins.

South Korea is a major exporter of semiconductors, cars, and electronics, so the won is sensitive to global trade and technology demand. The won is not traded offshore as freely as the major currencies, which is why international quotes often refer to non-deliverable forward (NDF) markets.
