The Indian rupee's symbol, ₹, was adopted in 2010 after a public design competition. It blends the Devanagari letter "ra" with the Latin "R", and the two horizontal lines at the top echo the Indian flag. The rupee is not fully convertible for capital flows, and the Reserve Bank of India actively manages volatility.
India is the world's largest recipient of remittances, money sent home by people working abroad, so the USD/INR and GBP/INR rates matter to millions of households. Travelers should know that taking rupee cash into or out of India is restricted by law beyond small amounts, so most visitors get rupees after arrival.
Where it's used
- India
- Bhutan (alongside the ngultrum, at par)
- Nepal (widely accepted)
