The dong is quoted in very large numbers, tens of thousands of dong per US dollar, and its old subunits (the hào and xu) are no longer used. The State Bank of Vietnam sets a daily central rate against the dollar, and banks may trade only within a band around it.
Vietnam's banknotes of 10,000 dong and above are printed on polymer. With so many zeros on each note, visitors commonly mix up the 20,000 and 500,000 notes, which are similar in color. US dollars are sometimes quoted for large purchases or in tourist areas, but the dong is the legal currency for everyday transactions.
