In 2005 Türkiye removed six zeros from its currency, replacing one million old lira with one new lira, after decades of high inflation had pushed prices into the millions. The lira symbol, ₺, was introduced in 2012 and is meant to resemble an anchor with two lines.
The lira has lost a large share of its value against the dollar and euro over the past decade amid high inflation. That makes exchange rates quoted only a few months apart noticeably different, so if you're planning travel or a payment, check the current rate close to the date rather than relying on an older figure.
