The baht was originally a unit of weight for silver, and the name is still used as a weight measure for gold in Thailand. In July 1997, after months of trying to defend its peg to the US dollar, Thailand let the baht float. It collapsed, and the shock spread across the region in what became the Asian financial crisis.
Today the baht is a managed float and one of the more stable currencies in Southeast Asia. Tourism is a big part of Thailand's economy, so rates matter to millions of visitors. Currency exchange shops in Thai cities often offer much better rates than airport counters, and they commonly quote better rates for larger foreign banknotes.
