Pegged to the US dollar (3.75 SAR per USD)

The Saudi riyal has been officially pegged at 3.75 riyals per US dollar since 1986. Saudi Arabia's oil exports are priced in dollars, so the peg removes currency risk from the country's main source of revenue, and the central bank holds large foreign reserves to defend it.

Because of the peg, the riyal effectively moves with the dollar against every other currency. Millions of visitors travel to Saudi Arabia each year for the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages, and exchange rates for the riyal matter a great deal to pilgrims budgeting for the trip from countries across Asia and Africa.
