The ruble is one of the world's oldest national currencies, in use in some form since the 13th century, and in 1704 it became the first currency in the world to be decimalized, divided into 100 kopecks. The current ruble dates to 1998, when three zeros were removed. The ₽ symbol was adopted in 2013.

Since 2022, international sanctions have restricted how the ruble can be traded and moved across borders, and many Western banks and payment networks no longer process ruble transactions. Quoted rates still exist, but converting and actually transferring money in or out of Russia can be difficult or impossible depending on your provider.
