Leu means "lion" in Romanian, a name inherited from Dutch silver coins that featured a lion and circulated in the region in the 17th century. The plural is lei, which is also how prices are usually written. In 2005 Romania redenominated the currency, replacing 10,000 old lei with one new leu.
Romania joined the EU in 2007 and plans to adopt the euro eventually, but hasn't met the requirements yet. The National Bank of Romania manages the leu closely against the euro, so EUR/RON has been notably stable. Romania was also one of the early adopters of polymer banknotes, and every leu note is polymer.
