The Mexican peso is the most actively traded currency in Latin America and one of the most traded emerging-market currencies in the world. Its liquidity means global investors often use it as a proxy for broader emerging-market sentiment. The "$" sign itself is widely believed to have originated with the Spanish and Mexican peso before the US dollar adopted it.

In 1993 Mexico introduced the "new peso", worth 1,000 old pesos, to simplify prices after high inflation in the 1980s. The peso has floated freely since the 1994 "Tequila crisis". Because of close trade ties and large cross-border remittances, the USD/MXN rate is one of the most important exchange rates in North America.
