The official name is the new Israeli shekel, introduced in 1985 at 1,000 old shekels to one new shekel, as part of a stabilization program that ended a period of very high inflation. The shekel was also a unit of weight and money in the ancient Near East, which is where the name comes from.
Israel's large technology sector brings in significant foreign investment, and the shekel has at times been strong enough that the Bank of Israel bought foreign currency to slow its rise. The shekel is freely convertible and one of the few currencies from the region traded widely on global markets.
