The rupiah is quoted in very large numbers, many thousands of rupiah to one US dollar, and the largest banknote is 100,000 rupiah. It is common to see prices written with a "k" for thousands, such as 50k. Indonesia has discussed redenominating the currency to remove three zeros, but has not done so.
The rupiah lost most of its value during the 1997 to 1998 Asian financial crisis, which led to major political change in the country. Indonesia is a large exporter of coal, palm oil, and nickel, so commodity prices affect the currency, and Bank Indonesia intervenes regularly to smooth sharp moves.
