The forint was introduced in 1946 to replace the pengő, which had suffered the worst hyperinflation ever recorded, with prices doubling roughly every 15 hours at its peak. The name comes from the gold florins minted in Florence and later in medieval Hungary.

Hungary is an EU member but has not adopted the euro. The forint is quoted in the hundreds per euro and per US dollar, and it tends to be more volatile than the other Central European currencies, partly because of Hungary's higher inflation in recent years.
