Since 1983 the Hong Kong dollar has been tied to the US dollar under the Linked Exchange Rate System, and since 2005 it has been held within a narrow band of 7.75 to 7.85 HKD per USD. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority buys or sells currency whenever the rate touches either edge, so USD/HKD barely moves compared with most currency pairs.
Unusually, most Hong Kong banknotes are printed by three commercial banks, HSBC, Standard Chartered, and Bank of China (Hong Kong), each with their own designs, backed by US dollar reserves. The government itself issues only the 10-dollar note and coins. The Hong Kong dollar is also accepted in many shops in neighboring Macau, although the reverse is rarely true.
