Exchange rate regime
Floating (since 2024, after several devaluations)

The Egyptian pound has been devalued sharply several times since 2016, as Egypt moved from a tightly managed rate toward a more flexible exchange rate, most recently with a large devaluation and float in 2024. Before those moves, a significant gap sometimes opened up between the official rate and the rate on the parallel (black) market.

The pound is divided into 100 piastres, called qirsh in Arabic, and you'll still see prices given in piastres for small amounts. Tourism, remittances from Egyptians abroad, and Suez Canal fees are major sources of foreign currency for the country.
