The Czech koruna (crown) was created in 1993 when Czechoslovakia split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Slovakia later adopted the euro, but the Czech Republic kept its own currency despite joining the EU in 2004, and there is no target date for switching.
From 2013 to 2017, the Czech National Bank capped the koruna's strength at 27 per euro, buying euros to prevent the currency from appreciating while inflation was very low. Heller (haléř) coins were withdrawn in 2008, so cash prices are rounded to whole korunas, although prices can still be quoted in hellers.
