The Colombian peso is quoted in the thousands per US dollar, and prices are usually shown without cents. Oil is Colombia's largest export, followed by coal and coffee, so energy prices have a strong influence on the peso's value.
Because Colombian prices use the same "$" sign as the US dollar, it is easy to mistake a price in pesos for dollars at a glance, especially online. Some tourist businesses write COP or USD explicitly for that reason. Colombia's central bank, the Banco de la República, has been independent since 1991.
