The Canadian dollar is nicknamed the "loonie" after the common loon on its one-dollar coin; the two-dollar coin is, naturally, the "toonie". Canada is a major exporter of oil and other natural resources, so the Canadian dollar is considered a commodity currency, and it often moves with oil prices.

Canada stopped producing the penny in 2013. Cash transactions are rounded to the nearest five cents, although card payments are still charged to the exact cent. Because so much of Canada's trade is with the United States, the USD/CAD rate is one of the most closely watched exchange rates for Canadian businesses and cross-border shoppers.
