The real (plural reais) was introduced in 1994 under the Plano Real, which finally brought an end to years of hyperinflation. Brazil went through several different currencies in the decades before that, including the cruzeiro, cruzado, and cruzeiro real, each introduced to knock zeros off prices.
Brazil is a major exporter of soybeans, iron ore, coffee, and oil, so the real is sensitive to commodity prices. It is also known for being relatively volatile compared with other large currencies, which matters if you're budgeting for a trip or a payment a few months out.
