The taka replaced the Pakistani rupee after Bangladesh became independent in 1971. The word taka has long been used across Bengal to mean money in general, and the Bengali script for it, ৳, serves as the currency symbol.

Bangladesh's economy relies heavily on garment exports and on remittances from millions of workers abroad, especially in the Gulf. The exchange rate has been tightly managed, and the central bank has made several changes in recent years to move toward a more market-determined rate, so it's worth checking the current rate before any significant transfer.
