Pegged to the US dollar (3.6725 AED per USD)

The UAE dirham has been pegged to the US dollar at 3.6725 dirhams per dollar since 1997, and the central bank holds dollar reserves to maintain it. As a result, the dirham's value against the euro, pound, or rupee moves almost exactly in line with the dollar's.

The UAE is home to a very large expatriate workforce, and remittances from the UAE to South Asia and elsewhere are a major flow of money. For someone earning dirhams and sending money home, the relevant rate is effectively the US dollar's rate against their home currency, adjusted by the fixed peg.
